Ideas are meant
to be explored.

I'm Zhiyu (Kevin) Sun, a student at McCallie School interested in the space between mathematics, artificial intelligence, and the physical world. This is a collection of questions I've followed and things I've made.

A selection of projects

Selected work.

From computational imaging to hands-on engineering, each project begins with a question.

Seeing the unseen

I combine a DDPM image prior with Diffusion Posterior Sampling to reconstruct endoplasmic reticulum images. The selected PSF deblurring configuration improves PSNR from 25.19 to 31.88 dB and reaches SSIM 0.953. Pixel-wise uncertainty maps highlight regions that need careful interpretation.

A single trained prior was evaluated across four degradation operators.

Tracking a rocket in motion

I developed an Extended Kalman Filter framework that combines simulated IMU and GPS measurements to estimate attitude, velocity, and position. The simulation explores how GPS update frequency and process noise affect estimation accuracy.

A simulation-based framework demonstration; real-flight validation is future work. Mentor: Andrew Voss.

Also exploring / Mathematics

Differential geometry & minimal surfaces

Through the CCIR one-on-one mentorship with Dr. Tsz Kiu Aaron Chow, I studied differential geometry and explored the catenoid and minimal surfaces.

Beyond the desk

Thinking on the wall.

Another kind of problem solving—through movement, persistence, and practice.

I have been a member of McCallie’s varsity climbing team since 2023. Climbing gives me a physical way to work through challenges and learn alongside others.

Beyond the projects

Curiosity takes
many forms.

I like exploring how things work—whether through equations, a problem on a climbing wall, or the mechanism of a Rubik's Cube. Each offers a different way to learn by doing.
